Tips for staying cool as the weather warms up

It feels like we just were sharing our favorite tips for keeping your home warm and your heating costs down. Well, times have changed, and inevitably the temperature gauge is starting to go up. In preparation for the warmer weather, we wanted to share our favorite tips for staying cool as the heat increases, and how to get the most out of your custom home.

Close the blinds to lower costs. It’s incredible the difference blinds and curtains can make in keeping a home cool. During the warmest parts of the day, where the sun shines most prominently on your home, keep your blinds and curtains drawn to avoid solar energy from making its way into your home. This solar heat can be powerful and tough to dissipate, so this simple tip can go a long way in keeping cooling costs low.

Keep up on air conditioner maintenance. Just as your heating system requires regular checkups, your cooling system deserves regular TLC too. Replacing the filter every month or two during the summer is a good rule of thumb, and it’s smart to ask a professional to come out and check everything thoroughly before the highest temps start to hit.

Use wind power to keep your cool. Creating a cross breeze is a simple and easy way to keep air flowing, and you can do this in several ways. By opening cross-positioned windows and doors, you can create a natural breeze. You can also use ceiling fans — rotating counterclockwise to send cool air downward and pull hot air upward — to circulate the air and prevent that stale feeling we all are familiar with.

Use the best of mother nature. Love landscaping? Plan on being in your home for many years to come? (We hope so!) Well, planting shade-producing trees is not only a fun way to get outside and get your hands dirty. It’s also a great way to provide natural, beautiful shade to block the sun’s rays and keep your home cool. Focus on the south and west sides of your home for the greatest impact.

Use tech to manage costs. Programmable thermostats and other smart home tools are a great way to save money, because they let you set specific times of day when the AC goes on and when it goes off. That way you aren’t wasting energy during times when the family is out of the house, and can ensure the home is cool and comfortable for when you arrive home after a long day. It’s great to note that several of our home options here at Wayne include these smart thermostats, and they’re also available in several upgrade circumstances.

Using high quality building materials is another way to keep your house cool and comfortable. If you’re building with Wayne, you’re in luck, because we have a whole host of energy efficient options, including:
