Cottage Chic Made Easy

When you think “cottage chic”, images of white-washed walls, comfy couches, cozy fabrics, and warm lighting may come to mind. This interior design style is popular because of the welcoming atmosphere it creates in your home. Want to know how to achieve cottage chic in your home? The design team has the tips and tricks you need to create your own cottage style.

Cozy Fabrics

The first step in creating the cottage home of your dreams is making it comfortable. Cottage chic is all about a fresh, relaxed and cozy environment that says “welcome home”. No structured, uncomfortable chairs here! Think slipcovered couches in an off-white or country-inspired pattern. Easy chairs with a side table for your cup of tea, a warm blanket draped over it and a reading lamp so you can dive into a good book. Comfy pillows are a must and store chunky knit blankets in a woven basket for guests to grab and make themselves at home. Try switching out a coffee table for a tufted ottoman with a large tray. It says, “Come on it and put your feet up!”

Warm Lighting

Thank goodness you can get LED lights in warm white because harsh, blue-based light has no place in a cottage. Use a mix of floor and table lamps to create a warm, inviting ambiance you and your guests will love. Overhead lighting should be soft, encouraging lamps to be turned on to set the tone of the room. Use dimmers with your chandeliers or recessed lighting to achieve the warm look you’re going for. Try incorporating touches of aged gold or brass for an old-world look that brings that antique feel to your decor. Always consider if the pieces you pick up look like they could have been passed down through generations. Even if they’re brand new.

Finishing Touches

The finishing touches make all the difference for cottage-inspired homes. When picking up home decor items, choose natural materials and select weathered finishes whenever possible. If you are building a new home, take this approach when choosing fixtures and finishes. For example, choose aged brass faucets and weathered oak floors. Cottage chic feels lived in. It creates a sense of history. Try antiquing to find unique decor items for console tables or bedroom finishing touches. And, always choose muted tones over vibrant colors. When in doubt, choose white. You’ll love how your cottage chic home feels fresh and cozy at the same time.
